This month in DC History
The patriotic Captain Atom met his foe Major Force for the first time in 1988. Major Force was the 2nd test subject for the “Captain Atom Project” and was assigned to shadowy government bureaus. He died a lot but always came back. They probably shouldn’t have given superpowers to a guy who was sentence to life for murder. Bad move guys.
What else happened in 1988?
- Despite Barbara getting shot in The Killing Joke, Batman cracked a smile in the end of it. Probably from a whiff of Joker’s gas.
- Hawk and Dove got their own miniseries but not the boys club of yesteryear since Dove was dead. Dawn Granger took the role of Dove and the five issue series reestablished the pair.
- A Death in the Family happened and Jason Todd lost a popularity poll that could only be devised by Jigsaw.
This poll showed up on the DC Comics Facebook page yesterday. Amazingly enough, these are the answer options you have:
- Let the history unfold as part of the ongoing story
- Crisis on Earth-New52: How the experiment ends and we return to the “real” DCU
- Bring back some characters, such as Wally West, Cassie Cain, and Stephanie Brown
- Bring back the old DCU
- A combination of the two. Backup features are also a cool way to add backstory
- More special issues like the #Os
- A fold out special timeline issue
Currently, the first option is leading in votes with just a little over 252 votes. The second option is in second place with just 92 votes. You can also add your own opinion to the poll.
I’m signal boosting this, because whether or not you love or hate the DCnU reboot, this may be a legitimate attempt from DC Comics to take the pulse of their readership. So make your voice heard, vote to reflect your opinion, and reblog this link so that your fellow DC comic fans can share their vote as well!!!
DC are looking for feedback on where to go with the New 52.

Greg Rucka isn’t happy with the state of play in either Marvel or DC it appears…
At least that appears to be the case in a recent interview.

As some may know, the meeting for September will see us delve into the bizarre and amazing world of DC’s The Creeper/Jack Ryder and his co-creator Steve Ditko.
Things are bound to get really interesting. So we hope to see you there.
You can find more details here on the site or over on Facebook on the events page for the latest meeting.

September’s meeting of Cornwall Graphic Novel Group will be focusing on Steve Ditko and his slightly obscure creation for DC: The Creeper and his alter ego Jack Ryder.
Finally, the consensus for the upcoming meeting is that we go and have a chat about “alternate universes”. This means that not only will be comparing the various Marvel and DC universes, but we’ll also be having a look at some comics/trades/graphics that have alternate universes as a theme or plot device, like George R.R. Martin’s Doorways as pictured.
Expect Slider references too and revisits to Superman: Earth One and a look at Batman: Earth One.
The next meet will be happening on Saturday 18th August in Loading at 2pm. I’ll be putting a poster together soon.

Development art from 25 years ago for an unsold idea at DC Comics. Thanks to pal Paul Kupperberg (who was to be my co-creator on the comic) for unearthing the art.
The Trickster, a character that never was…

In perhaps one of the most interesting pieces of satire about the state of journalism today, The Onion has ripped into the depiction of one of the most well known fictional newspapers in the world: The Daily Planet from the Superman comics.
Basically, the paper is the most unbelievable part of Superman’s universe according to this fine piece of writing.
On a serious note: in terms of elements that are meant to help ground a comic book in the real world and help you suspend your disbelief, The Daily Planet is no longer a great tool for that, as it’s so removed from the realities of journalism today. The irony is that by not depicting the true state of journalism in the comics of Supes, writers at DC are missing out on a great subplot device that could throw some none villainous peril into the the lives of many of the characters from Superman. It’s a missed narrative opportunity.

P.S. Don’t forget that the latest meeting is today at 2.30pm - we’ll be talking about Batman.
^THIS IS BANE
^THIS IS A S****Y ACTOR WITH A SQUID ON HIS FACE
- Bane’s costume for the film is very different from his comic book counterpart who wears a Mexican wrestler’s mask.
- Tom Hardy stands around 5ft9 where Christian Bale is over 6ft. In the comics, Bane towers over Batman…
Err, anyone else as upset as this guy about the differences between the latest film version of Bane (i.e. Christopher Nolan’s interpretation) and his usual comic book set-up?
